Jesus is God

A common statement from Muslims is that Jesus never said that He is God. This is true that it was never directly in those exact words, but:

  1. Jesus does claim to be God
  2. God says Jesus is His Son, and is God

The first point is that Jesus claims to be God. If we begin in the Old Testament, we can see that God continuously uses the title the "first and the last", which is that none comes before God, and none comes after God:

Isaiah 44:6
This is what the Lord says — Israel’s King and Redeemer, the Lord Almighty:
I am the first and I am the last; apart from me there is no God.

Isaiah 48:12
Listen to me, Jacob, Israel, whom I have called:
I am he; I am the first and I am the last.

This is the same title that Jesus uses in Revelation. In context, this is John being spoken to by Jesus:

Revelation 1:17-18
17 When I saw him, I fell at his feet as though dead. Then he placed his right hand on me and said: “Do not be afraid. I am the First and the Last.
18 I am the Living One; I was dead, and now look, I am alive for ever and ever! And I hold the keys of death and Hades.

Notice that this is similar in Islam, as Allah is said to have the same title:

Quran 57:3
He is the First and the Last; the Outer and the Inner; He has knowledge of all things.

Beyond just the title, there are many other places that Jesus claims to be God, such as when Jesus was speaking to the Jews, claims to be God and they want to stone Him.

John 10:25-31
25 Jesus answered, “I did tell you, but you do not believe. The works I do in my Father’s name testify about me,
26 but you do not believe because you are not my sheep.
27 My sheep listen to my voice; I know them, and they follow me.
28 I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; no one will snatch them out of my hand.
29 My Father, who has given them to me, is greater than all; no one will snatch them out of my Father’s hand.
30 I and the Father are one.”
31 Again his Jewish opponents picked up stones to stone him

Why did the Jewish people want to stone Jesus? Because Jesus claims to be God. Jesus says that He is God all throughout the New Testament:

John 8:58
"Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

Jesus healed a man that had been crippled for 40 years, but had done so on the Sabbath - a day of rest. Rather than looking into why Jesus can heal the sick, the Jews try to stone Jesus for breaking the Sabbath. Jesus explains that God continues to work on the Sabbath, therefore He can - Jesus once again claiming to be God.

John 5:16-18
16 So, because Jesus was doing these things on the Sabbath, the Jewish leaders began to persecute him.
17 In his defense Jesus said to them, "My Father is always at his work to this very day, and I too am working."
18 For this reason they tried all the more to kill him; not only was he breaking the Sabbath, but he was even calling God his own Father, making himself equal with God.

It's very clear to see that Jesus does claim to be God over and over. Jesus says God is His Father, but God says Jesus is both His Son, and God:

Matthew 3:17
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Hebrews 1:8
But about the Son he says,
"Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom."

It's clear to see that Jesus says that He is God, and that God says Jesus is God.

A Christians View

Jesus says that He is God, and God says Jesus is God. A few clear examples:

John 8:58
"Very truly I tell you," Jesus answered, "before Abraham was born, I am!"

Matthew 3:17
And a voice from heaven said, “This is my Son, whom I love; with him I am well pleased.”

Hebrews 1:8
But about the Son he says, "Your throne, O God, will last for ever and ever; a scepter of justice will be the scepter of your kingdom."
